Gina  Thomas

Cafe Supervisor
Gina joined Summerset after operating her own café and coffee roastery in Auckland. She had moved to Christchurch to spend more time with her family, and with her Mum in full time care, Gina felt a pull to working at Summerset: “from the minute I walked in, I knew this was where I was meant to be”.

As the Café Supervisor, Gina is a key member in not just running the village café, but organising and overseeing special events, like themed dinners and charity fundraising events like Daffodil Day. She loves being a part of the extra activities put on for the residents, “it brings everyone closer together”.

When asked what Gina enjoys most about the role, though, she says it’s the residents. “Just because you are ‘elderly’, it doesn’t mean you don’t matter. Some of the best people I have ever met are part of my working day; and most are well over 80. I miss them on my days off!”

“Every single team member plays a pivotal role in ensuring residents are cared for, and their needs are met with good food and the care they deserve; I feel really privileged to play a small part in keeping the level of service high”

“Working at Summerset, it’s always about the residents and their families, and creating a safe, caring, welcoming place that people want to come to everyday. Understand your environment and show patience, kindness and empathy – and great barista skills!”
